Ever since driving thru Long Canyon in 2012 I’d wanted to camp there. I was excited to be heading back but nervous about finding a spot as I remember there not being many. Our day started off driving thru Capital Reef National Park via hwy 24. We drove thru magnificent red rock landscapes before hopping on Hwy 12 where the topography turned in to alpine forests as we drove thru Dixie National Forest. From there we descended back in to red rock country as we picked up the Burr Trail at Boulder Town. Here is where we headed in to Long Canyon, a narrow canyon with towering rock walls in every direction. To my delight, we lucked out finding an open campsite, one of very few, that would be the perfect place to call home for the night. Perched beneath a cottonwood tree shedding it’s last yellow leaves, we listened to the wind howl all night and were glad we decided to move on from our previous campsite where there was sure to be nothing but walls of sand moving at a rapid pace along the desert floor.
It was about this point in our trip that our hopes to slow down, camp more and drive less started to go out the window. We didn’t have service and the road we were parked right alongside turned out to be much busier than we’d assumed. It was a beautiful spot, if only for one night but we took off the next morning in search of….what exactly…we weren’t sure.
Next stop, Kodachrome Basin State Park coming up next…
so peaceful…love you two, Mom
Great pictures!! Did you guys ever get that blue bird in the air?? 🙂
Michelle and Mark, thank you for the all the insights you have shared. Just bought a FWC Hawk Shell and am waiting for the rain to die down here in California!!! Too stiff and old to backpack and sleep on the ground, this style of camping and travel has opened up so many possibities. Best wishes in all your endeavors. Phil and Ria
Congratulations on your FWC purchase, you’re going to love it! All the best to you both on the many adventures that lie ahead.
Hi there. First time visiting our site. Your trailer got my attention, but your other stuff is great too, as is your view on life.. We are full timing in 6 months and have a truck camper. We want to tow a trailer too, but want something that can handle off-road travel. How is yours working so far? How heavy is it? We have someone nearby who can make us one just like it with a utility bed. Seems roomy inside. Can you add solar to the roof of the cap? It seems feasible. Anyway, any feedback would be very welcome and keep on adventuring. BTW, I used to live in Grand Junction, so I was very familiar with the McInnis Rec Area. I used to explore it quite often.
Thanks,
Scott and Karen
