Mexico Day 12: The mighty Pacific

Shell beach //

You may or may not have noticed that we crossed over from the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula to the Pacific side of the peninsula.  It’s easy to do in Baja and offers a completely different beach experience.  Unlike the Sea of Cortez, the Pacific offers a constant wave break, making for a loud and rhythmic soundtrack that accompanies any campsite we choose on the west coast.  Sleeping here comes with built-in background noise that some people pay for by way of white noise machines.

The sea life does not abound in this particular area but we’re just as captivated by the waves on this sunny albeit chilly morning.  Staring out at the Pacific is both mesmerizing and intimidating.  I think to myself If I were a bird and flew west in a straight line, how long would it take me to reach land again?  The thought of how much ocean stretches out in front of us is mind-blowing.

Sitting still today allows us all the opportunity to tend to chores, work on hobbies, and play on the beach.  Fishing, jewelry-making, photo editing, working out, coloring, napping, long walks on the beach…it’s fun to see how the five of us all choose to spend our day.

Mid-day the text we’ve all been anxiously awaiting pops up on our phones. Our mutual friends Heather & Adam crossed the border this morning after making the long trek from Ohio.  The seven of us became a friend group when the stars aligned in Baja last year and ever since we’ve been holding our breath hoping that the stars would align once again and we would all have the opportunity to do more traveling together.  Months ago, when we were all on completely different courses and schedules, the chances felt slim; but now that Heather & Adam are officially in Mexico it is actually happening and we are all buzzing with excitement.

With Heather & Adam getting close, the conversation opens up about when we think we might want to board the ferry to mainland Mexico.  The plan all along was for Baja to simply be the primer for this winter’s travels so that we could ease our way back in to Mexican culture before venturing into all new territory.  We’re all expecting mainland to be a completely different experience and so I look around and remind myself that the time to soak up and appreciate all that Baja has to offer is now.  After we depart for Mazatlan, I have no idea what’s in store for us.  But I cannot wait to find out.
