Mexico Day 130: The end is upon us

San Ignacio, Baja California Sur //

The decision has been made. In four days, after 4+ months traveling extensively around Mexico, we will return to the US. This morning, the objective is to decide where we want to spend our last days along the 440 miles that lie between us and the border.

Last week, we learn that the Baja 250 race is taking place this weekend in San Felipe. That means thousands of people are congregating around the San Felipe area, and so it’s an easy decision to steer clear of that region until the weekend has passed. That leaves a handful of nice beaches to choose from between San Felipe and where we currently are in San Ignacio. That is until Mark opens up the Windy app and sees 30mph wind forecasted for that entire stretch of coastline. We’ve had plenty of experience riding out windy days on Baja’s beaches and prefer to avoid those kinds of conditions whenever possible. Through a process of elimination, we realize that our best option is where we currently are; protected from the wind in San Ignacio’s palm oasis. While I was hoping for some more beach time before leaving Baja, I’m not about to be greedy. Our week spent in Agua Verde was Baja perfection, and if we have to leave it at that, I am perfectly satisfied and immensely grateful.

We considered crossing the border sooner, but thanks to our Temporary Vehicle Import Permit that must be canceled at the border, that’s not an option. To cancel our TIP, we have to visit the Banjercito office, which may or may not be open on the weekend; we’ve read mixed reports. Not wanting to risk showing up and the office being closed, we are set on crossing on a weekday. Besides, we prefer crossing on a weekday anyhow to avoid an hours-long wait in the US customs line.

With all of that, our last days are now planned. Today and tomorrow will be spent here in San Ignacio; then, we will divvy up the remaining miles between two final campsites before crossing the border. That means these are our last two drive-free days in Mexico.

And just like that, the end is upon us.
