Mexico Day 14: A long-awaited reunion

Shell Beach to Laguna Ojo de Liebre //

It’s our third morning waking up to the constant roar of the Pacific and I think we’re all ready to seek out some place quieter.  The vastness of the ocean is captivating but the roar of it has no volume control and I’m sick of saying “whaaat?” every time someone tries to talk to me.

Our plans for the next leg of this journey have changed more than once in the last couple of days.  As of now, they’re hinging entirely on tomorrow’s forecast which is predicting sustained winds of 30mph with gusts of 50mph in many of the surrounding areas.  That’s the kind of wind that makes this lifestyle extremely uncomfortable.  With that thought at the top of our minds, we choose our next destination based solely on where the weather models are predicting the least amount of wind.  This means heading back north towards Guerrero Negro.

Our course has us passing two of Baja’s best fish taco trucks today and so naturally we stop at the first one for a late breakfast.  The Baja fish taco is all about the toppings and the taco stand of the same name, “Baja Fish Taco” in Vizcaino, is nailing it when it comes to toppings.  I pile my tacos so high with toppings that you’d never know there’s fish underneath.  $12 for six tacos and we’re beyond satisfied by the time we pull onto the highway and head for Guerrero Negro.

When we arrive in town and roll up to the Super Ley grocery store, a milestone moment of this trip occurs.  We are finally reuniting with Heather & Adam.  For months the seven of us talked about and hoped for this moment but we were never entirely certain our timelines would match up.  Almost a year ago to the day Baja brought us all together for the first time.  We were elated that we’d all be traveling together once again.

If you were to ask other travelers why they go to Guerrero Negro, my guess is that 9 out of 10 would answer “Tacos El Muelle”.  Also known as Tony’s Tacos, I think this taco truck might be the most well known and most highly sought after in Baja.  It’s without a doubt our favorite and even though we already had three tacos each in our bellies, we couldn’t help but add a few more.  Our side by side comparison today made it official, Tacos El Muelle is the superior fish taco.  Fish tacos were all that we ate on today and we had no regrets.

A long dirt road through featureless desert and salt flats leads us out to the edge of Ojo de Libre, a lagoon famous for migrating grey whales that live here and birth their calves every winter.  We pay the entrance fee and then have our choice of palapa.  I’m guessing once the whales arrive spots will be hard to come by.  For now, we have the place all to ourselves.  After positioning the three trucks we set up our seating area inside the palapa and are grateful for the protection from the cool breeze.  Hopefully a breeze is all we’ll contend with but we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to find out if we successfully avoided the high winds that drove us here.
