Mexico Day 17: field repairs

San Ignacio //

When you find a campground this good, you slow down, savor it, and stay awhile.  All six of us knew this oasis in the small town of San Ignacio was one of those places and so we planned to stay.  By late morning, most of the other campers in the campground departed and I wondered if they’d known to savor it too or if they would learn that after the fact.

Mark has his work cut out for him today.  The day before crossing into Mexico he discovered the differential on the truck was leaking.  This was incredibly frustrating to find as we had just paid a shop several thousand dollars to rebuild the differential before leaving Colorado.  It should not be leaking.  For the last two weeks he has kept an eye on it knowing at some point he would need to reseal the cover.  With Adam having picked up the parts Mark needed before Heather and he crossed the border, and with San Ignacio offering grass to work in, the time had come.  Most of Mark’s day was spent underneath the truck disassembling the differential, cleaning it, and putting it back together.  Adam and Josh took the opportunity to work on their own projects turning it into a rather productive day for everyone.

Seeing each of these guys working on projects at a campground in Mexico just as comfortably and easily as they would be on their home turf, gave me a surge of pride and excitement.  International vehicle-based travel, something we’re all pursuing more of, requires the ability to diagnose, repair, and problem-solve wherever you are and Mark, Josh, and Adam all have that ability.  Further, put all of us together and the collective pool of our knowledge and resources makes for a really capable convoy.

A productive day followed by hot showers in one of the nicest campground showers in Baja leaves us all feeling ready for a night out on the town.  It’s a quiet night in San Ignacio’s town square but we don’t mind as we have all the entertainment we could ask for within our own little group.  The night is full of laughs, good food, good ambiance, and the best company.

During dinner Darci says “my mind is fast forwarding to 20 years from now, I can see us all sitting here on this patio reminiscing about right now”.  You know you’re living the good life when know your reality is destined for reminiscence.

  • Sorry to hear about the big repair job but nice it could be done in that environment. I love the restaurant you ate at!
