Mexico Day 19: On to Plan B

San Ignacio to Playa el Requeson //

Our last morning at Paraíso Misional in San Ignacio is bittersweet.  We’ve made some great memories at this little campground over the last year and I have no idea when we will be back, especially as a group.  The tinge of sadness reminds me to appreciate the fact that we’re together now and will be for at least a while longer.

A two hour drive to Mulege is on the docket for today.  It’s a mostly easy drive down Highway 1, the one and only road that spans the entire length of the Baja peninsula.  However, the potholes and lack of any shoulder whatsoever requires your constant unwavering attention.  The steep descent down the mountain pass north of Santa Rosalia can be especially nerve-wracking depending on the amount of semi-truck traffic.  With each blind curve, all you can do is hope that any on-coming traffic is remaining in their lane.  Mere inches remain when a semi-truck passes in the opposing lane. Mark handles it like a pro, as he always does.

We stop just south of Mulege for lunch, we’re not about to pass by the restaurant that serves Baja’s best pizza before heading to our next campsite.  The Fuego Tropical pizza at Mulege Brewing Company is everything we remember.  Stuffed and satisfied, we make our way another half hour south to Bahia de Concepcion.  Many popular campgrounds line the beaches of this picturesque bay and we land at a nice spot at our first choice beach, Playa el Requeson.

The hope was to take advantage of the turquoise water here, to blow up our boards and boats, and play on the water.  However, the wind is howling, sand is pelting our faces, and all we care to do is tuck our chairs up close against the trucks and try to get as much reprieve as possible.  Unfortunately the forecast is predicting an even windier day tomorrow.  We subsequently hash out a Plan B for the coming days.  Changing course is something we’re extremely accustomed to in this lifestyle and so we sort it out pretty quickly and easily.  We’ll make the most of the morning before the wind kicks up and then back to the road we’ll go.
