Mexico Day 20: Be careful what you wish for

Playa el Requeson to Loreto //

The full moon is captivating this morning.  On my way to the bathroom I admire its glow against the soft pink hues of the sunrise.  It slowly disappears behind the mountainside at the exact same time that the sun is rising.

The morning is serene, not so much as a ripple can be found on the water.  Oh how easily we could all become one with our chairs while we soak up the glory of this white sand beach here on Bahía de Concepción.  But we know the wind is coming.  Yesterday afternoon wasn’t much fun and we’d rather not spend the entire day hiding from sand-filled gusts.

As packing gets underway, Mark, Josh, and Hannah decide to go for a swim first.  It feels like such a shame to drive away from this paradise without at least enjoying a little of what it has to offer.  I decide I can’t resist and put on a swimsuit and join in.  If it weren’t for all the fish, the small, shallow bay filled with turquoise water could be mistaken for a five star resort swimming pool.  It’s easy to see why this is one of the most visited and photographed beaches in Baja.

The wind kicks up just as we’re leaving, affirming our decision to not stick around.  It’s an easy two hour drive to the well-known and well-loved town of Loreto.  Americans flock to Loreto and the prices and fluent English-speaking Mexicans reflect that fact.  It’s a beautiful little town nonetheless and we’ve come for an overnight stay at a small RV park in the center of town so that we can hide from the wind.  It turns out that Sunday is the wrong day of the week to enjoy some shopping and dining, our favorite restaurant is closed along with many others.  It’s not until now that I realize how much I enjoy the liveliness of Loreto.  Today is the quietest we’ve ever experienced.

By 8pm we’ve all tucked ourselves away inside each of our campers.  It is then that a honking extravaganza gets underway.  It sounds as though a parade of cars is circling downtown, everyone honking their horns incessantly.  It goes on long enough that I begin to wonder if it will ever stop.  This isn’t the kind of liveliness I was hoping for but it’s the kind of liveliness we got.
