Mexico Day 46: A very damp day

Agua Buena, San Luis Potosí  //

It turns out that we arrived in this tropical paradise just in time for a low pressure system that is bringing rain and unseasonably cold temps to the area.  What drew us to this particular region are the high concentration of waterfalls and turquoise pools that typically are ripe for swimming.  Instead, today we pull out clothing we haven’t ever touched in Mexico…rain coats, rain pants, and waterproof shoes.

In the morning we attempt to sit outside and enjoy our morning coffee but the light mist is slowly but surely dampening us from head to toe.  And while fifty degrees may sound balmy to many people in the States right now, the fact that we spend our entire year chasing good weather has made us pretty soft when it comes to cooler temps.  How we lived through so many Colorado winters at 8,000’ I’ll never understand.  But I digress.

There’s only one place that looks appealing today and that’s the inside of our tiny home.  The mist turns to a steady rain encouraging me to cozy up in bed and watch YouTube.  The several hours we spend inside may be our longest streak spent indoors in months and is a welcome opportunity to decompress from our week on the go.

Come late afternoon, not wanting to go to the effort to cook and clean inside our tiny space, we layer on all the clothing needed to keep us warm & dry so that we can walk a mile down the road to the nearest restaurant.  We return to the same spot as yesterday but this time they’re serving dinner and I don’t recognize many of the options on the menu.  I randomly select the “bistek a la Mexicana” and concede that blind ordering is part of the cultural experience when in a country whose language I do not speak.  What arrives is a plate with a beautiful and flavorful beef stew accompanied by rice & beans.  Soup and a simple dessert bookends our dinner and I’m certain I’m hearing the server wrong when she tells me that the total for our two meals is $200 pesos or $10 US, but that is indeed accurate.

The rain has finally lifted by the time we make the walk back to camp and I’m glad for the opportunity to spend some time outside.  The seven of us gather our chairs around for a little post-dinner conversation.  Once the temp drops below fifty with the humidity at 100% we are all ready to close out the day and return to our cozy campers.

  • That “bistek a la Mexicana” looks so good! I found a recipe for it so that’s a go for dinner this week. I hope the weather turns warm for you all. I’m glad you’re off the road and enjoying a new area. Safe travels to you all.
