Colonia El Meco, San Luis Potosi //
I manage to make it until about 7am before getting out of bed and although I have yet to speak to anyone, I’m certain all four of us are thinking the same thing. How on earth do people sleep when there is a rooster cock-a-doodle-dooing all.night.long? That dang bird never quit.
After breakfast we go for a walk to the viewpoint for Cascada el Meco. They are unlike any of the other falls that we’ve seen and are a spectacular sight to behold. With each waterfall we’ve stood before this week I’m confronted with the exquisite force that water can create. It’s humbling to watch and know that if caught beneath such a fall, survival would be questionable.
Back at camp Mark and Adam blow up our watercraft so that we can all go for a paddle on the river that we’re parked beside. It’s approaching 90 degrees and is a great day to be out on the milky turquoise water. Our upstream paddle reaches its conclusion when we come to a series of falls. We turn around and paddle downstream until we reach another waterfall roadblock at the opposite end. We consider portaging around and continuing up the river on the other side but my stomach would prefer we return home and make lunch.
More time is spent indoors this evening than preferred but the biting no-see-ums are out in full force. I go back and forth between retreating inside to our bug-free but stifling hot 90 degree camper and putting on pants and long sleeves and sitting it out with the bugs in the open air.
Before saying goodnight to Heather & Adam, we confirm our plans for tomorrow. We’ve reached the end of our waterfall tour. After nine days in the La Huasteca Potisina region, it’s time to make our way south.

A short walk from camp took us to Cascada El Meco.

A leisurely paddle was the perfect way to spend a hot afternoon.
Sunset on the river before retreating inside to hide from the bugs.

Definitely some spectacular waterfalls! It looks like turquoise dye has been put into the water! So pretty. I hope your next spot will come without bugs and roosters!
It 100% looks like dye has been added to the water!
Vetting these places’ll let the rest of us know where NOT to go. Those grey skies don’t look very appealing either.
