Northbound: Our last 10 days in Baja

After spending a night in Los Barriles, it was time to say goodbye to our travel companions and begin the journey back North. While Seth & Drea had another entire month to bask in all that is good and wonderful about Baja, we, on the other hand, had to be back in the states in 9 days time. We didn’t NEED 9 days to get back to the border but we like to travel slow, allowing ourselves the opportunity to savor the miles and the beaches, rather than just flying past it all.

Tracking back North meant revisiting a couple of our favorite spots from the trip as well as exploring a few new backroads and beaches. The new spots we found only reinforced the fact that we’d barely scraped the surface on all that Baja has to offer.

How unbelievably lucky we were to spend 37 days in the wonderland that is Baja California. However, if we have it our way, we’ll be back next winter for even longer. We had a pretty strong inclination that we would love this place but it exceeded our expectations by a long shot.

Last week we crossed the border at Mexicali with no issues and could officially say:

-we didn’t get sick
-we weren’t robbed
-we weren’t killed
-we didn’t have any issues at the 8 military checkpoints we stopped at
-we were never pulled over or bribed by police
-we never once felt unsafe
-we were treated with nothing but kindness by the Mexican people

I know everyone has their own experience and yes, bad things happen. However, I believe our fear of the unknown and fear of what the media chooses to share with us holds us back from experiencing a new perspective on the world and of our neighbors. This trip opened our minds. It humbled us. And it shattered misconceptions.

“Fear doesn’t prevent dying. It prevents living.”

We cannot wait to go back.

Thank you to everyone that followed along on our journey! It was the trip of a lifetime and has been so much fun sharing it with you all! We’ve absolutely loved reading all your comments and recommendations.

Now it’s time to move back in to our toy hauler and resume our RV travels around the West!

Have our new Hallmark now-hope to see you In Baja next year

    • Nope, that photo was taken at Playa Ligui, south of Loreto.

Congrats on the delivery of your new truck camper! I hope many adventures await you!

  • So happy you had such a great time. Very relieved you didn’t have any issues. Just love reading about your adventures. The pictures are just beautiful. Nice to hear the good things about Mexico. Take care kids, love aunt Linny

  • Hi, do you feel it would be safe for a single woman in her 50’s to travel Baja, as you did, on her own? I need some adventure!

    • Since I didn’t have the experience of traveling solo, I can’t answer that confidently. However, I can tell you that we met several woman your age traveling on their own. I believe if you do your research ahead of time, use common sense when traveling, and don’t travel at night, you’re likely to have a good experience!

  • Beautiful pictures! So happy you had a great experience in Mexico! The dog was super cute! Love you both. As mom

  • I know is trendy to say Baja, however we California peninsulars would prefer that our state is referred as the California peninsula rather than by the state name of Baja California. The Gulf of California is also the correct name, not mar de Cortéz (sea of Cortéz).
    Thank you
