Baja Day 12: Bahia de Los Angeles to Guerrero Negro

A note to our wonderful readers: Just wanted to let you all know that I finally got a chance to catch up and respond to all the comments we’ve been receiving. Your kind notes are a joy to read. Thanks so much for following along. Our adventures are that much more fun when shared with you!

After a 3.5 hour drive south today, seeing little to nothing aside from expansive desert, we arrived in the town of Guerrero Negro. The first substantial town since San Felipe, 250 miles north of here.

This town is a mix of brand new establishments, dilapidated yet functioning businesses, and buildings turned to rubble (likely due to Hurricane Kay that hit last September). It’s also home to what many say is the best fish taco truck in all of Baja. So, of course, that’s our first stop. And they don’t disappoint.

After tacos we run a few other errands then pop in to what we thought was a Best Buy type electronics store. Nope. What we found instead was a large selection of shoes, a few motorcycles, and a full-service bank. A few blocks down the road is “Elektra”. It has the look of an electronics store so we give that a shot. Nope. Here you can buy, again, motorcycles and also Nintendo and PlayStation games, appliances, helmets, mattresses, tires, and car batteries. Oh, and another full-service bank.

Later we get settled in our spot at an RV park, then go for a nice long stroll about town. I bring a camera along and as much as I don’t like to be that tourist, I want to capture more than just beautiful beaches and majestic sunsets. The days we spend in towns, interacting with the locals, is what makes this experience rich and even more memorable.  No matter how badly we fumble with our very limited Spanish, everyone treats us with kindness and patience.

The RV park fills up and we’re tucked in nice and tight alongside many fellow travelers. Luckily everyone is quiet inside each of our little homes on wheels. Not motivated to cook, we eat a bag of chips for dinner, watch some You Tube videos, and call it a night.

  • Do you guys reserve spots at rv parks ahead of time (and if so…how far in advance?) or do you just show up and hope for the best? Thanks!

    • We don’t and I’m not even sure if places around here accept reservations. It’s all very low-key and low-tech, we kind of love it that way.

  • Oh but how your photos bring back memories of when I stayed a couple nights in Guerrero Negro in January 2001. Thank you for penning such truthful impressions and catching those photos. Bless you for learning a little Spanish every day. One of the reasons (economics, food, friends, art) I lived in Tijuana for nine years was to learn the language better than I had at school. Now, thanks to that I am sometimes working as a translator. Sadly, have not been back to Baja California since before the pandemic – but your writing and photography whet my appetite to return. Keep on truckin’ ! ! !

    • I love hearing that our photos bring back memories for you! We’re really enjoying learning the language but it’s definitely a slow process. That’s awesome that you’ve advanced to the point of sometimes working as a translator!
