Baja Day 4: Rancho Grande to A Cactus Wonderland

We woke at 2:15am. The wind had died down but now it’s back with a vengeance. We try to accept that it is what it is and go back to sleep but a few especially angry gusts cause us to sit straight up. The forecast may say one thing but that doesn’t mean nature will comply. We ponder the best course of action but don’t have many options. Putting the top down on the camper would be ideal but might be impossible in these conditions. I move down to the couch, Mark stays in bed and we hope for the best. I lay wide awake listening to endless sand pelt the truck, it sounds like static on the radio that you can’t turn off.

At 6:30am, I open my eyes and am in shock to learn that it’s light out and we both slept. What were probably 50mph gusts had died down to 20 or 30. We packed up and hit the road in search of something, anything better than the last 24 hours.

A friend told us about a place to camp in the desert about an hour south. We arrived to a cool, peaceful breeze and one of the most beautiful desert landscapes I’ve ever seen.

The rest of the day was spent in a deep state of gratitude and relaxation.
