Winter in Baja Day 15: A day of play

San Juanico //

I am not a morning person.  And yet, when we’re in Baja, I wake easily at dawn, eager to take in the sunrise.  This morning I take advantage of the fact that we’re parked on one of the most walkable beaches on the entire coast and go for a two mile stroll.  I can’t think of a better way to start a Thursday morning.

While eating breakfast we watch two people go by on paddleboards and I’m inspired to get out on the water.  Last time we were here I was too nervous to get past the waves and therefore never ventured out.  This time I was ready to give it a go.  The waves were small and easy to push past and before I knew it we were paddleboarding for the first time ever on the Pacific Ocean.  It was glorious.  Getting back to shore was a little trickier though and both of us got tossed in the water as soon as a wave got under our boards and turned us sideways.  We laughed like little kids and in that moment I think our fear of the ocean ever so slightly loosened its grip.

I handed off my board to Adam and while him and Mark went paddleboarding I went for a swim.  Having never been warm enough to wear a swimsuit during our 3 months here last year, I was delighted by the warm weather and temperate water.  Mark must have been as well since he followed up paddleboarding with a little boogie boarding followed by some snorkeling.  All the toys were getting used today helping to justify the slight inconvenience of towing a trailer.

At sunset Josh cooked & shared ground Mule deer with the group for dinner, served alongside our collective stock of tortillas, avocados, salsas, and hot sauces.  Food is starting to run low amongst all three households but I think we’re all determined to get creative in order to stretch out our time on this heavenly beach.  Or at least that’s what I’m hoping, because New Years is right around the corner and I can’t think of a better place to celebrate.
