One year in a Casita

In the fall of 2017 we sold our house, bought a 17′ Casita Spirit Deluxe and hit the road for a year. Our setup was unique in that we paired the Casita with our Four Wheel Camper; the Casita serving as our living area and the truck camper our bedroom. The year concluded when Mark accepted a job opportunity in Idaho upon which bought a house and sold the Casita. The following posts are stories from our Casita chapter of travel.

Winding down our winter of wandering

W

After a week spent in the magnificent Alabama Hills, March was coming to a close.  We’d been on the road for six months and it was time to decide how we wanted to spend our final six weeks of travel before returning to Colorado for the summer.  We could go anywhere and do anything but there was one particular thing that we couldn’t stop thinking about and that was an...

Alabama Hills lives up to the hype

A

Of all the Instagram photos I’ve seen over the years, there has been one place that I’ve seen over and over and over again that I knew I had to see with my own eyes.  The Alabama Hills outside of Lone Pine, CA.  This well-known, insanely beautiful and unique stretch of public land is perfectly poised at the base of the Eastern Sierras; making it easy to understand...

Trona Pinnacles Teaser

T

At the end of January we made a goal to cut way back on our stays in campgrounds and take better advantage of the free camping opportunities found throughout the vast public lands of the West.  We’d been missing the peaceful serenity of the wilderness, not to mention the cost of campgrounds was adding up.  However, we were quickly learning the major disadvantage to...

Hiding out in the California desert

H

After leaving Death Valley we decided to delay our Northbound trajectory due to the weather.  As we were lazily cruising down a deserted California highway, I noticed some interesting rock formations in the mountains to the West.  We pulled over, dug thru our maps and found a road to take us there.  The start of the road was easy then turned to sand.  We were hopeful we wouldn’t have to turn...

A few things we’ve learned from 6 months living on the road

A

I can hardly believe that it’s been 6 months since we sold our house and set off to try our hand at full-time RV living.  Without a doubt there has been a learning curve and we still become a little better accustomed to this lifestyle every week.  There have been good days and bad as well as a lot of learning about ourselves and life on the road. Here are a few things we’ve learned...

Camping below sea level in Death Valley National Park

C

Here’s what I knew about Death Valley before going: 1.  A select group of crazy people attempt to run 135 miles thru Death Valley to Mt. Whitney every summer in a race called the Badwater 135.  I know this because I love to read about them. 2.  There are rocks that mysteriously move across the flat desert floor on their own accord and no one is certain how. So why did we go to Death Valley?  I...

One night in Pahrump, NV & what our resupply days are like

O

My favorite thing to share on this website are pretty pictures of all the scenic places we go.  However, that is hardly a look at the ins and outs of life on the road.  Managing resources and route planning are two large time consuming components of our travels, so I was thinking it might be fun to share with you guys what our resupply days look like. About once a week, we dedicate an entire day...

Trying to not get stuck: 3 nights on a not-so-dry lakebed

T

After three nights spent camped outside Oatman recovering from our nasty sinus infections, we were ready to move on.  (I think it’s the first time ever I didn’t take a single photo of our camp.)  We moved a little over an hour away to a dry lake bed outside Las Vegas.  We figured it was a good place to go thru the last of our food before restocking in Vegas.  What was intended to be a one night...

Laying low in Lake Havasu and the worst part of RV living

L

Four weeks ago today we arrived back in my hometown of Lake Havasu City, AZ.  We had spent a month there back in November/December and needed to return to install the trailer parts that didn’t show up in time during our last stay.  It was an excellent excuse to spend some more time with my family and enjoy a little more desert weather before beginning our travels through the Eastern Sierras...

Our rules of the road plus stops in Prescott NF & Oatman, AZ

O

From Cottonwood the plan was to make our way back to Havasu where our new lift kit and shock kit were waiting installation.  It’s a simple 240 mile drive primarily via Interstate 40.  If Google showed you the way, it would only take you 4 hours to make the trip.  But we have a few rules and they don’t in any way correspond with Google’s calculations.  Our...
